Where business process meets Microsoft technology.

When a customer service case is resolved, an order ships or the month-end close completes, Dynamics 365 is often the system behind it. Dynamics 365 professionals configure, extend and connect the applications that run core business processes, from sales and service to finance and supply chain. As UK organisations modernise with Microsoft’s cloud, Power Platform and Copilot, experienced consultants, developers and architects are central to making those systems work the way the business does.

We work with growing businesses moving onto Business Central, scale-ups outgrowing their first systems after product-market fit, and fintechs, public bodies and charities that rely on Dynamics 365 in regulated environments, introducing Microsoft professionals to programmes where their work shapes how organisations operate.

Establishing your D365 career

Most people come into Dynamics 365 from one of two directions. A business, finance, sales or operations background, often including hands-on experience of the processes Dynamics 365 supports, suits functional consulting. A software development background, often in C#, suits technical consulting. Others join through apprenticeships, graduate schemes or early-careers programmes at Microsoft partners.

Microsoft offers a structured certification path, starting with foundational certifications and moving into role-specific ones for functional and technical consultants. These are a credible way to show platform knowledge before you have project experience, and they’re particularly useful early in your career. The certifications on offer change over time, so it’s worth checking Microsoft Learn for the current options. Pairing a certification with hands-on practice, for example in a trial environment, makes the strongest case.

]The skills you need depend on whether you lean functional or technical, though both share a strong understanding of how businesses operate.

Functional consultants

  • Business process knowledge: understanding how areas such as finance, sales, customer service or supply chain work in practice
  • Requirements gathering: turning business needs into Dynamics 365 configuration
  • Testing: supporting user acceptance testing to make sure solutions work as intended
  • Communication and training: explaining the system clearly and helping users adopt it

Technical consultants and developers

  • C# and JavaScript: building custom functionality and extensions
  • Integration: connecting Dynamics 365 with other systems and data
  • Azure and Power Platform: extending solutions with Microsoft’s wider cloud and low-code tools
  • Dataverse and SQL: understanding how data is structured and queried

Across both paths, curiosity about how organisations work and a methodical approach to problem-solving are real strengths.

Both paths offer strong careers, and successful Dynamics 365 projects depend on the two working closely together.

  • Functional consultant: suits people who enjoy understanding how a business works, working with users, gathering requirements and configuring the system to support real processes
  • Technical consultant: suits people who enjoy coding, building integrations and extending the platform beyond what configuration alone can do

Many people also specialise in a particular module, such as Finance, Supply Chain, Sales,Customer Service or Business Central, and that specialism often shapes the roles they’re considered for. Your background is usually a good guide. Finance and operations experience often leads naturally into functional work, while development experience leads into technical roles. Skills from either side remain valuable throughout your career.

Dynamics 365 pay in the UK grows with experience and specialism. Early-career roles build the foundations. As professionals develop module expertise, particularly in areas such as Finance and Supply Chain, take on integrations and solution design, or lead implementations, earning potential increases. Power Platform and Azure skills can also broaden the roles open to you.

Advance your D365 career

Experienced Dynamics 365 professionals can progress through functional, technical or leadership routes, with the focus shifting from delivering individual workstreams to shaping wider business and technology outcomes.

  • Senior Consultant: owning larger workstreams, managing stakeholder relationships and leading complex configuration or development
  • Solution Architect: designing end-to-end solutions and turning business requirements into scalable platform designs
  • Principal Consultant or Senior Architect: deepening expertise and influencing large-scale transformation programmes
  • Delivery Lead or Programme Manager: taking responsibility for project success, teams and delivery across implementations
  • Practice Lead or Head of Business Applications: setting strategy, building teams and owning client or stakeholder relationships

Consultants who build expertise beyond a single module, such as Power Platform, Azure, integrations or solution architecture, often open the widest range of senior opportunities. We can help you understand where your experience is most valued.

Copilot, Microsoft’s AI assistant built into Dynamics 365, is changing some of the more repetitive parts of the role, such as summarising records, drafting content and generating routine reports. For functional consultants, that means less time on manual tasks and more time on business analysis and process design. For technical consultants, AI-assisted coding tools are speeding up routine development in the same way they are across software engineering.

What AI doesn’t replace is the judgement needed to design a solution, understand how a business really works and guide clients through change. Experienced consultants are also increasingly asked to help organisations adopt Copilot and Copilot Studio responsibly, deciding where AI adds value and how it should be governed, particularly in regulated environments.

Yes. Advertised Dynamics 365 roles have picked up over the past year, as organisations continue to modernise business systems, move from older Dynamics versions to the cloud and extend their platforms with Power Platform and Copilot.

Experienced professionals who combine deep functional or technical expertise with broader Microsoft skills are particularly well placed. That includes Finance and Supply Chain specialists, consultants with integration and Azure experience, and solution architects who can design end-to-end platforms. Industry knowledge, whether in financial services, the public sector or another field, can also help you stand out. Being clear about the module, sector and type of programme you want to work on will help you target the roles where your experience counts most.

Both are Microsoft’s ERP solutions, but they serve different types of organisation and lead to different careers. Business Central is designed for small and mid-sized organisations, often growing businesses moving on from entry-level systems. Implementations tend to be shorter, and consultants often work across finance, sales and operations within a single project. Finance and Operations is designed for larger, more complex organisations, often with multiple entities or detailed supply chain needs. Programmes tend to be longer, and consultants usually specialise in an area such as Finance or Supply Chain Management.

Business Central suits consultants who enjoy variety and faster delivery, often within Microsoft partners supporting growing companies. Finance and Operations suits those who prefer depth and large transformation programmes, frequently in established and regulated organisations. Strong business process knowledge transfers well between the two, and we can help you understand which path fits your experience.

Dynamics 365 expertise is needed wherever organisations are modernising business processes or replacing older systems. Opportunities span both consulting and in-house roles:

  • Microsoft partners: delivering Dynamics 365 projects for clients across sectors, from design through to deployment
  • In-house Dynamics 365 teams: running and improving an organisation’s own platform over the long term
  • Growing businesses and scale-ups: implementing Business Central or Dynamics 365 as they outgrow their first systems
  • Financial services and fintech: streamlining operations, reporting and customer relationship management with strong governance
  • Public sector, housing associations and charities: case management, service delivery and stakeholder relationships
  • Manufacturing and operations-led businesses: using Finance and Supply Chain to improve production and logistics

Partner roles often offer variety across clients and projects, while in-house roles offer the chance to shape a platform over time. We can help you understand how organisations differ in platform maturity and the type of work on offer.
