Behind every well-priced risk is the right actuary.
We specialise in actuarial recruitment across the UK, covering Non-Life (GI) Insurance, Pensions, Actuarial and Portfolio Management & Analytics. Our international network also extends to Singapore, Hong Kong and Bermuda, giving you access to experienced professionals from other leading insurance and reinsurance markets.
Actuarial and analytics professionals play a key role in some of the most important decisions made by insurers and pension schemes: how risks are priced, how reserves are set, how much capital to hold and how portfolios perform. When the right people are in place, pricing stays disciplined, reserving is robust and boards can make strategic decisions with confidence, while meeting the expectations of the PRA, Lloyd’s and your own governance framework.
Actuarial recruitment for insurers, syndicates and consultancies
Each of our consultants specialises in a particular area of the insurance market, so the conversation starts from current, specialist knowledge the moment you brief us. That matters right now. With risk-adjusted pricing softening by 3.5% across the Lloyd’s market in the first half of 2025, there is a growing focus on pricing actuaries who combine technical rigour with commercial judgement. At the same time, Solvency UK and IFRS 17 continue to shape what reserving and capital teams need.
We use this context to understand exactly what your role requires. That could be a syndicate pricing actuary supporting business planning, a reserving lead strengthening your year-end process or a capital specialist working on your internal model. From there, we look at how candidates have set and defended assumptions, applied data and modelling skills such as R or Python, communicated results to underwriters and boards, and progressed through their IFoA qualifications. The result is a shortlist that reflects both technical strength and the right fit for your team.
For Chief Actuary and Head of Function appointments, our expertise extends into executive search.
We recruit across the actuarial market, covering qualified actuaries and actuarial analysts, Chief Actuaries, Heads of Actuarial functions, executive leadership and interim board appointments:
- Non-Life (GI) Insurance: Pricing, reserving and capital modelling actuaries across personal, commercial and specialty lines, including Lloyd’s syndicates and reinsurers.
- Pensions: Scheme actuaries, consulting actuaries and specialists in de-risking, longevity and bulk annuity pricing.
- Actuarial: Qualified and part-qualified actuaries and actuarial analysts, plus Chief Actuaries and Heads of Actuarial functions.
- Portfolio Management & Analytics: Portfolio managers, underwriting performance and exposure analysts, plus pricing and data specialists who turn portfolio data into underwriting and capital decisions.
However your actuarial function is set up, we shape our support around what you need right now.
If you’re building or strengthening an in-house team at an insurer, Lloyd’s syndicate, reinsurer or pensions provider, our conversations focus on team structure, qualification mix and long-term fit. We’ll help you balance qualified and part-qualified hires, plan for exam progression and decide where contract support adds value. Year-end reserving, business planning and model change are typical examples.
If you’re an actuarial or pensions consultancy, we keep things targeted on the technical skills, client experience and availability your engagements require.
When the right person isn’t available locally, our international network spanning Singapore, Hong Kong and Bermuda can widen your search to professionals with experience in other leading insurance and reinsurance markets.
We offer contingency, retained and contract hiring, with IR35 considerations in mind for contract roles. See our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages for more detail.
We support organisations where actuarial insight drives pricing, capital and long-term financial decisions:
- Lloyd’s syndicates and managing agents: Pricing, reserving and capital roles supporting business planning and Lloyd’s oversight requirements.
- London market insurers and reinsurers: Specialty, commercial and reinsurance portfolios, where exposure and portfolio analytics guide underwriting strategy.
- UK general insurers: Personal and commercial lines, where pricing and reserving teams work within Consumer Duty and fair value expectations.
- MGAs and specialty carriers: Growing businesses building actuarial, data and portfolio capability to support capacity providers.
- Life and pensions insurers: Bulk annuity and longevity teams supporting continued activity in pension risk transfer.
- Pension schemes and consultancies: Scheme actuary, advisory and de-risking expertise for trustees and sponsors.
- International insurance and reinsurance hubs: Professionals with experience across Singapore, Hong Kong and Bermuda.
A specialist actuarial recruiter understands both the technical demands of the role and the career path behind it. The right actuary strengthens pricing, reserving and capital decisions, so a well-matched hire has a lasting impact on your business.
Our consultants explore what candidates have delivered in practice, such as reserving reviews, pricing models, capital work and transactions. They also understand the IFoA qualification journey, so we can match candidates to your team’s structure and study support. We share up-to-date salary insight by qualification stage, along with day-rate trends and realistic availability, so you can plan with confidence. Our long-standing relationships reach actuaries who aren’t actively looking or visible on job boards, both in the UK and across our international network in Singapore, Hong Kong and Bermuda.
We work across permanent, fixed-term and contract hiring and understand the context of Lloyd’s, the London market, UK general insurance and pensions. That knowledge shapes the brief, the search and the shortlist.
Actuarial hiring trends for insurance and pensions
Whatever the role, IFoA progress is still the starting point, with Fellowship expected for senior positions and CERA valued in capital and risk. Strong Excel, SQL, R and Python skills are increasingly standard, especially in pricing, where actuarial and data science roles are converging across insurtech and MGAs. Experience with platforms such as ResQ, Igloo, Radar or leading catastrophe models adds value, as does knowledge of Lloyd’s processes, Solvency UK, IFRS 17 and Consumer Duty. The best hires pair that depth with the confidence to explain their work to underwriters and boards.
Actuarial pay in the UK is shaped above all by qualification stage, followed by specialism, sector and location. Pay typically steps up with each exam milestone and most significantly on reaching Fellowship. Experience in Lloyd’s, capital modelling, specialty pricing and London-based roles tend to sit towards the upper end of the market.
As a guide:
- Actuarial analysts: Reported base salaries typically range from around £27,000 to £45,000, with a median of around £34,000. Mid-career analysts report a median closer to £42,000.
- The wider profession: Official earnings data for the occupational group that includes actuaries, economists and statisticians shows a median full-time salary of around £53,000. The middle half of earners sits between roughly £42,000 and £74,000.
Qualified actuaries, senior specialists and Heads of Actuarial Function are typically benchmarked individually as pay depends heavily on portfolio, seniority and market. Bonuses can add significantly to base salary.
Contractors, often brought in for year-end reserving, business planning or model changes, usually work on day rates. These also cover their own pension, holiday and non-working days, so they don’t compare directly with an annual salary. IR35 status can also affect the overall cost of a contract engagement.

Machine learning and advanced analytics are fast becoming part of everyday actuarial work, especially in pricing, where techniques such as gradient boosting are now common in personal lines. AI is also starting to help with routine reserving, reporting and data preparation, giving actuaries more time for the judgement and interpretation that really add value.
That makes governance more important than ever. Pricing models still need to deliver fair value under the Consumer Duty so teams must be able to explain how a model reaches its results and guard against unintended bias. Capital and reserving models continue to sit within established validation frameworks and any AI-supported process needs the same oversight and documentation. UK GDPR applies wherever personal data is involved.
For hiring managers, AI is broadening what they look for. The strongest candidates pair actuarial judgement with confidence in data science and can tell when a model’s output can be trusted and when it needs challenging. In interviews, it’s worth asking how candidates have used machine learning or AI, how they validated the results and how they explained them to underwriters or boards. Our consultants explore that experience in depth, helping you build a team ready to use advanced analytics with confidence.
Experienced actuarial specialists are in demand but the picture is more nuanced than a simple shortage. The IFoA’s qualified membership grew 9.2% to 18,645 in the year to February 2025, while student numbers have stayed broadly flat. The pressure comes from roles that need specific, hard-won experience, such as London market reserving, capital modelling, bulk annuity pricing or actuarial and data science skills combined.
This shapes how hiring managers approach a search. Experienced and newly qualified actuaries are often settled in roles they’re happy in so reaching them depends on established relationships rather than simply advertising. It can also pay to look at part-qualified candidates with strong exam progress, supported by a clear study path, or at professionals with experience in other leading insurance and reinsurance markets. Through our international network spanning Singapore, Hong Kong and Bermuda, we can help widen your search when the right person isn’t available locally.
