ERP built for people-based organisations.

Universities, charities, councils and professional services firms run on people and projects. Unit4 brings their finance, HR and project accounting together, and experienced Unit4 professionals help keep those systems working as organisations move to the cloud.

We work with professional services firms growing their operations, and with public bodies, universities and charities strengthening delivery in regulated environments, introducing Unit4 specialists to organisations where their expertise supports the services people depend on.

Establishing your Unit4 career

Many people come into Unit4 from finance, HR, payroll or project roles in organisations that already use it. Understanding how those processes work, and using the system day to day, is a strong foundation. Common routes include:

  • Finance and HR roles: moving from a user of Unit4 into a systems or support position
  • Finance systems or support analyst roles: maintaining and improving Unit4 within an organisation’s finance or HR team
  • Accountancy training: bringing qualifications such as AAT, ACCA or CIMA into a finance systems career
  • Unit4 partners: joining an implementation partner and learning through client projects

Universities, public bodies, charities and professional services firms are common places to start, as Unit4 is widely used in these organisations. Building strong process knowledge, alongside reporting and data skills, makes a solid platform for progressing into consulting.

Unit4 ERP is a finance, HR, payroll and project management system designed for people-based organisations, such as universities, public bodies, charities and professional services firms. It brings these areas together in one platform, so organisations can manage budgets, people and projects in a joined-up way.

You may also see it called Unit4 Business World, or by its earlier name, Agresso, which is still widely used in UK job adverts. ERPx is Unit4’s cloud platform, and many organisations are moving to it from on-premises versions. Knowing these names helps when you’re searching for roles, as employers don’t always use the latest product name.

Process knowledge matters as much as system knowledge in Unit4 roles. These skills are most useful early on:

  • Finance or HR knowledge: understanding processes such as purchasing, accounts payable, budgeting, payroll or HR administration
  • Project accounting: understanding how organisations track costs, time and income against projects
  • Data and reporting: building reports and management information, often using Excel
  • Testing and support: helping test changes and resolve issues for users
  • Data protection: handling sensitive finance and HR data responsibly, in line with UK GDPR
  • Communication: working with finance and HR colleagues to understand what they need

As your career develops, configuration, integrations, data migration and cloud experience become increasingly valuable, particularly as organisations move to ERPx.

Unit4 certifications are less commonly listed in job adverts than they are for some other ERP platforms. Many Unit4 professionals build their skills through hands-on experience, on-the-job training and Unit4’s own learning resources, often provided through their employer or a Unit4 partner.

Finance qualifications can be just as valuable, particularly for functional roles. Accountancy qualifications such as AAT, ACCA or CIMA show a strong understanding of the processes Unit4 supports. For most employers, practical experience with the system and a clear understanding of finance or HR processes make the strongest case.

Unit4 pay in the UK grows with experience and specialism. Early-career roles, often in finance systems support or analyst positions, build the foundations. As professionals develop configuration skills, project accounting expertise or experience moving organisations to ERPx, or step into consulting and project leadership, earning potential increases.

Moving your Unit4 career forward

Most Unit4 professionals build depth in one area, such as finance, HR, payroll or project accounting, before broadening out. From there, experienced professionals typically move in one of several directions:

  • Senior Functional Consultant: leading complex configuration and design across a module or client
  • Solution Architect: designing how Unit4 fits with an organisation’s wider systems, data and integrations
  • Finance Systems Manager: owning Unit4 within an organisation, leading its roadmap and supporting teams
  • Programme or Delivery Lead: running implementations, upgrades and moves to ERPx
  • Practice Lead: building teams and client relationships, often within a Unit4 partner

Experience taking organisations from on-premises Unit4 to ERPx often opens the widest range of senior opportunities, alongside breadth across finance, HR and project accounting. We can help you understand where your experience is most valued.

Unit4 is building more automation and AI into its cloud platform, particularly in finance and reporting. Routine tasks such as reconciliations, data entry and standard reports are increasingly automated, and digital assistants are helping users find information and complete everyday tasks more quickly.

For experienced professionals, that shifts the value towards process design and judgement: deciding how processes should work before they’re automated, making sure data is accurate and well governed, and helping organisations adopt new capabilities with confidence. In public bodies, universities and charities, where accountability for spending is high, getting that right matters.

Our view is that AI is turning Unit4 consultants into process designers as much as system specialists. Professionals who combine deep finance or HR knowledge with an understanding of automation are well placed for the roles emerging around it.

Unit4 is a specialist market, and its rhythm often follows the budget and planning cycles of the public sector, higher education and the third sector, which can differ from the corporate calendar. Many opportunities are linked to organisations modernising their systems, particularly moving from on-premises Unit4 to ERPx, as well as to ongoing support and improvement.

Experienced professionals with ERPx, project accounting, payroll, integration and data migration experience are particularly well placed, as are those who understand the reporting and accountability requirements of public and third sector organisations. Because the market is specialist, being clear about the module, sector and type of role you want helps you target the right opportunities.

Unit4 is designed for people-based organisations, which shapes where its roles are found:

  • Higher education: universities managing finance, HR and research project accounting across large, complex institutions
  • Public sector and local government: councils and public bodies with strict reporting and accountability requirements
  • Charities and not-for-profits: organisations that need strong financial control and clear reporting to funders
  • Professional services: firms that bill by project, where project accounting is central
  • Unit4 partners: consultancies delivering implementations and upgrades across these sectors

Partner roles often offer variety across clients and projects, while in-house roles, such as within a university or council finance systems team, offer the chance to shape a platform over time.

Unit4 experience transfers well, because the underlying knowledge, such as finance processes, project accounting, HR and payroll, data migration and testing, applies across ERP platforms. Many organisations also run Unit4 alongside other systems, so familiarity with tools such as Dynamics 365, Oracle or SAP can be useful in integration and migration work.

For experienced professionals, adding knowledge of a second ERP system can broaden the roles open to you in a specialist market, while keeping Unit4 as your core strength. It can also be valuable when organisations are reviewing or replacing their systems, as consultants who understand more than one platform can help compare options and plan the move. We can help you understand how your experience translates across platforms.
