Software Development & Engineering Recruitment

The wrong software engineer costs more than their salary.

Delayed releases, accumulated technical debt, and a team whose trust takes months to rebuild all trace back to the same root cause: a recruiter who could not genuinely assess the candidate in front of them before placing them into a team.

Gravitas specialises in software development and engineering recruitment across the UK. Our consultants work within specific technical disciplines, not across every vacancy on the market. When you brief us, you're speaking to people who understand the difference between a software engineer and a software developer, between a solution architect and a tech lead, and what 'strong' looks like in your stack.

Software Development & Engineering recruitment for you

Software development and engineering recruitment is the process of finding, assessing and placing the technical professionals who design, build, maintain and evolve software systems. It covers permanent hires, fixed-term appointments and contract engagements across the full spectrum of engineering roles - from mid-level developers to principal engineers and engineering leadership.

It is a discipline that demands genuine technical understanding. Software engineering is not a single skill set. A backend engineer building distributed systems in Java is a fundamentally different profile from a frontend engineer building accessible user interfaces in React, a DevOps engineer owning cloud infrastructure on AWS, or a mobile developer shipping native iOS application in Swift. A recruiter who cannot distinguish between these profiles cannot assess them accurately - and cannot advise a hiring manager on what is realistic to find.

That is the problem with generalist recruitment in software. Volume is easy. Precision is not. Gravitas is built around the latter.

Gravitas recruits across the full software development and engineering landscape, from backend to platform engineering to technical leadership. Our consultants specialise within specific technical domains, so the brief you give us is assessed by someone who understands what your role requires:

  • Backend Engineers & Developers - Java, Python, Node.js, C#, Go and more. API development, microservices, distributed systems and data-intensive applications.
  • Frontend Engineers & Developers - React, Angular, Vue.js, TypeScript. User interface development, progressive web apps and accessible, performant frontend engineering.
  • Full Stack Engineers & Developers - end-to-end ownership across frontend and backend; common in product-led organisations and scale-ups where team size demands versatility.
  • Mobile Developers - iOS (Swift), Android (Kotlin), React Native and Flutter. Native and cross-platform mobile application development.
  • DevOps & Platform Engineers - cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and site reliability engineering across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Solution Architects & Technical Leads - system design, technology strategy and technical leadership across product, platform and enterprise engineering organisations.
  • Data Engineers & ML Engineers - data pipelines, platform engineering and the infrastructure layer beneath data science and artificial intelligence applications.
  • QA & Test Engineers - manual and automated testing, quality assurance strategy, test automation frameworks and DevOps-integrated testing pipelines.
  • Emerging Technology Engineers - AI and LLM integration, Internet of Things, blockchain and other emerging technologies becoming part of mainstream engineering organisations.

Gravitas works with two types of organisations, and we approach each differently.

The first are enterprises managing complex hybrid estates, scale-ups building out their technology function, 0-1 hiring strategies, and businesses running their own software engineering teams in-house: product companies, fintechs, healthtech businesses, digital transformation programmes and established enterprises modernising their technology estate. Here, the conversation is about team composition, technical culture and long-term fit as much as individual skillsets.

The second is consultancies and technology partners resourcing client engagements: system integrators, managed service providers and tech consultancies who need to staff projects quickly and precisely. Here, the conversation is about specific technical capability, availability and commercial structure.

Gravitas offers contingency, retained and contract hiring, and adapts to whichever model suits the engagement. For a full picture of how we work, see our [permanent recruitment] and [contract hiring] pages.

We support clients across the breadth of the UK technology market. We recruit software engineers for:

  • Financial technology (fintech) - from payments infrastructure and trading platforms to lending applications and regulatory technology; engineering standards are high and technical depth matters.
  • Healthtech and life sciences - clinical software, patient-facing applications and data platforms; security, reliability and compliance requirements are stringent.
  • E-commerce and retail technology - high-traffic consumer platforms, order management systems and the engineering that powers modern retail at scale.
  • Enterprise technology and digital transformation - modernising legacy systems, migrating to cloud and building the engineering capability needed for long-term digital competitiveness.
  • SaaS and product-led businesses - software companies building B2B and B2C products where engineering quality is a direct competitive advantage.
  • Public sector and central government - digital services, cloud migration programmes and the growing technology function within UK government organisations.
  • Consultancies and system integrators - software engineering resource for client delivery across all of the above sectors.

Specialist software engineering recruitment outperforms generalist recruitment at every stage of the hiring process - sourcing, assessment, market intelligence and network reach. Generalist recruiters can fill software engineering roles; the cost shows up later, in lost time, delivery risk and team disruption from a poor hire.

  • Technical depth in sourcing - our consultants know which GitHub profiles, open-source contributions and technical communities signal genuine engineering capability. They are not keyword-matching CVs against job descriptions.
  • Honest candidate assessment - we assess coding ability, system design thinking and engineering judgement before a candidate reaches your interview stage. We are not passing through every applicant and letting you do the filtering.
  • Market intelligence you can use - live salary benchmarks, day-rate data, realistic availability timelines and an honest view of what your brief will attract in the current market. Not what you want to hear; what is true.
  • Deep candidate networks - relationships with software engineers built over years, across disciplines and seniority levels. We find people who are not actively looking and not on job boards.
  • Permanent and contract expertise - whether you need a software engineer embedded long-term or a specialist contractor for a defined engagement, we work across both and understand the commercial and IR35 implications of each.
  • Sector knowledge - we understand the specific engineering context of fintech, healthtech, e-commerce and enterprise technology. That shapes the brief, the search and the shortlist.

Software Development & Engineering Market intelligence

Across the roles Gravitas recruits for, a small number of core technologies show up consistently, though the specific mix shifts by specialism and sector.

  • Backend languages: Java, Python, C# and Node.js remain the most requested backend languages across UK software engineering roles, with Go continuing to grow in infrastructure-heavy and high-performance environments.
  • Frontend frameworks: React remains the dominant choice, with Vue.js and Angular holding smaller but stable shares; TypeScript has moved from a nice-to-have to a near-default expectation for frontend and full stack roles.
  • Cloud platforms: AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform between them appear in the majority of infrastructure, DevOps and platform engineering briefs Gravitas receives, with Azure particularly strong among financial services and enterprise clients.
  • Mobile: Swift and Kotlin for native development, React Native and Flutter for cross-platform; demand for genuinely native iOS and Android skill has held up better than some cross-platform commentary suggests.
  • Data and AI-adjacent skills: SQL remains close to universal, and Gravitas has seen a sharp rise in briefs asking for AI and LLM integration experience on top of core software engineering skill, rather than instead of it.

The technology named on a job spec is rarely the whole story. The engineers who move fastest through a process are the ones who can explain the trade-offs behind a technical decision, not simply list the tools on their CV, and that is what Gravitas assesses for before a candidate reaches your shortlist.

UK software engineering salaries in 2026 range from roughly £45,000 to £145,000 permanent (£350 to £950 per day contract), driven by specialism, seniority, location and sector competitiveness. These ranges reflect the UK market as Gravitas sees it across its placement activity:

  • Mid-level Software Engineer (2–5 years) - £45,000 to £70,000 permanent; £350 to £550 per day contract
  • Senior Software Engineer (5+ years) - £70,000 to £100,000 permanent; £500 to £750 per day contract
  • Principal / Staff Engineer - £95,000 to £130,000 permanent; £650 to £900 per day contract
  • Engineering Lead / Engineering Manager - £100,000 to £140,000 permanent
  • Solution Architect - £100,000 to £145,000 permanent; £650 to £950 per day contract

London roles and those in high-competition sectors such as fintech typically sit at the upper end of these ranges. Remote roles have narrowed regional variation but not eliminated it at senior and leadership level. For tailored benchmarking by role, specialism and location, contact us directly.

Gravitas’ 2026 Big Tech Employment Survey, drawn from niche technology professionals across the UK, singles out software development and engineering as a genuinely complex specialism in the current market.

  • Highest-paid specialism in the dataset: software engineering commands the strongest salaries of any specialism surveyed, consistent with what Gravitas sees in live placement activity.
  • Full AI adoption, but real anxiety attached to it: 100% of respondents in this specialism use AI tools day to day, yet the specialism also records the highest negative-impact rate (22%) and the highest redundancy anxiety (43%) of any group surveyed. The people most exposed to AI today are also the most concerned about what it means for their role.
  • A genuinely mixed diversity picture: ethnic minority representation grew from 13% to 18% year on year, though it remains joint-lowest across specialisms alongside 15% female representation and the lowest DEI sentiment score in the survey (26%). At the same time, software engineering is among the specialisms showing pay parity or, in some cases, a female premium, illustrating how uneven progress on diversity can be even within a single discipline.

For businesses hiring in this space, the practical takeaway is that top pay alone will not solve retention. The specialisms with the highest redundancy anxiety and the lowest DEI sentiment are the ones where genuine investment in career development and inclusive culture makes the most difference, not the least.
